Easy Food in Barcelona

Everyone has their comfort food at home, and new foods and especially new eating habits in Barcelona are real adjustments. From sobremesa, the tradition of prolonged chatting after meals, to late dinner times, I had to find good places to eat that aligned with my schedule.

People in Barcelona tend to start eating dinner around 9PM. Going out to dinner around this time is great and relaxing, but many people also have early classes that they need sleep for too. Finding the balance took some time since relying on fast food isn’t super sustainable.

In any study abroad location, it’s important to try the food first! Tapas are small dishes you share with others, really common in Barcelona. Patatas bravas are a common favorite since they’re literally fried potatoes with amazing bravas sauce. Croquetas are my personal favorite with a crispy outside and a meat and/or cheese filling that varies. Paella is just as common as a main dish. It’s a big pan of rice cooked with saffron and various meats and vegetables. Again, this isn’t supposed to be a single-person dish, and Barcelona really values sharing meals with others.

Still, especially students eating in between classes, sometimes people don’t have the time or people around to always share meals in this way. So far, I’ve found awesome options and go-to’s!

1. Gonzalez & Co.

I’ve posted on social media about this before. It is definitely my go-to for mexican and quite literally compares to Chipotle. They have burritos, tacos, bowls, chips, and even fries. You can expect to spend €10 – €20 per meal. There’s a new caesar burrito that is awesome as well. The best part is that they have multiple locations, one near a lot of shopping in Gran Via, and one right near UAB, the school I’m attending abroad!

2. honest greens

This is definitely an abroad favorite. Expect to see everyone you know in there any time of the day. The food is simple but amazing including various healthy bowls and meat plates with salad and bread. It reminds me of an upscale/healthier CAVA. They are laptop friendly and have a super aesthetic interior. The meals still average €10–€20, however, adding on sides (non-negotiable) such as sweet potato fries with truffle mayo, pistachio hummus, brussel sprouts, and grilled avocado. They also sell juices and kombucha. My go-to order is the honest salmon market plate with double salad and extra lemon mustard chicken, and if I’m starving the sweet potato fries as a side.

3. ALOHA

Wraps, salads, poké bowls--they have it all. Definitely a healthier option too, you can build your own anything. They also have a location in Gran Via near shopping and it isn’t usually too busy. Highly recommend ordering ahead on GLOVO for pickup or delivery if you want to take your time looking at different options. Expect to spend around €8.50 – €14.50. Maybe a little more if you want their desserts that include cheesecakes, cookies, fruit, or yogurt!
