In my opinion, solo traveling while you’re abroad is one of the most incredible experiences that you can have. It is a chance to explore a new city by yourself and do exactly what you want to do. You are not constrained by any other people and you have the chance to really explore. While studying abroad is a great opportunity to make new friends from all over the world- a step away by yourself can be extremely eye opening!
I recently took a solo trip to Vienna, Austria and I could not have asked for a better weekend and experience. I flew into the main airport in the city on Friday and spent the rest of the day Friday and all of Saturday exploring. I had the morning on Sunday to explore before heading back to the airport. I spent the entire time seeing the historic city, gorgeous churches, breathtaking palaces, and beautiful nature while enjoying incredible food :) Here are some lessons that I learned along the way that I will take with me back with me to Barcelona and to my life post-study abroad:
WANDER :) Wandering is such an art and such a beautiful way to see a new place! Put on some music or a podcast or just listen to the sounds of the city and roam! There is nothing more rewarding than stumbling upon new things when you weren’t expecting to!
Figuring out transportation systems can be so difficult in a new country with a language you don’t recognize! Apple maps is your best friend and a little research before your trip can be really helpful!
You’ll never regret taking too many pictures but you will regret not taking enough
Don’t be afraid to ask for help- people in stores or cafes or even on the street probably know the city better than you and can help!
No one thinks you look silly when you’re walking around or going to places alone! Think about the last person you remember who you judged for being alone- you probably can’t think of anyone :)) Live your life how you want- no one is really watching too close
Book things you know you want to do! It’s so nice to have one or two things to structure your day around!
Do the classic things in the city but don’t be afraid to look into your interests in the city you’re going to! I found a light show in an old church in Vienna because I looked into the art scene in the city ;)
Do what YOU want to do!! On my last day in Vienna, I decided to go back to a restaurant I went to on the first day because I couldn’t stop thinking about the fries I got and I don’t regret it one bit!
At the end of the day- studying abroad can feel a little lonely sometimes. You’re away from your family, home, friends, and the comforts of the place you grew up. However, challenge yourself! Lean into the feelings that make you a little uncomfortable and explore them! You never know what you will learn about yourself :)
PS: Sometimes you’ll get really lucky and run into a familiar face 4,000 miles away from home (see pic 4)
