A Weekend in Munich, Germany!

Munich, Germany is a must-see!

Nine out of the ten of us Americans in the cohort decided to take a trip to Munich for our third weekend! Don’t worry, the tenth was sick, not left out. It was super fun and allowed us to bond and get to know each other better. Unlike the others in our cohort, we Americans knew we got into the IBEA program before starting college since USC selects its cohort members during the application phase. Therefore, when we arrived at USC in the fall of 2023, we already knew we were in the program and had the chance to meet each other over the first year and a half. Besides having a few classes together and being friends on social media, we didn’t really know one another. This trip, along with basically doing everything together here in Germany, has made us a lot closer.

After our winter academy class on Friday, January 31st, we took a three-hour ICE train to Munich. There are two types of trains in Germany: regional ones, which can be purchased at a relatively low cost or with a monthly Deutschland Ticket, and the more expensive, faster Intercity Express (ICE) trains. ICE trains are much better for traveling longer distances in Germany and throughout Europe.

Munich is the capital of Bavaria, a traditional southern state in Germany. Known as the birthplace of Oktoberfest, the city hosts the largest and most traditional celebration, attracting over six million visitors each year. Unfortunately, we’ll be back at USC during Oktoberfest this year, but we still enjoyed the sights and food this region has to offer.

We spent all of Saturday walking around, enjoying the beautiful buildings. It felt like everywhere I turned, there was a new sight! It seems like every new city I visit in Germany becomes my new favorite. They are all so similar yet so different at the same time, and each brings a unique feeling! I would describe Munich as traditional, lively, enchanting, and captivating. The entire time I was there, I was mesmerized by the stunning churches, the Rathaus, the many clocks, and the grand buildings and shops. Everything felt more dramatic—the streets were long, the buildings were massive; I felt like I was walking through a traditional German fairytale.

There are still many tourist attractions we didn’t see, like Olympiapark, but I thoroughly enjoyed everything we did! Although I’ve already lived in Germany for five years before, I had never tried Jaegerschnitzel before this trip. Let me tell you, I loved it, especially paired with Spaetzle and Apfelsaftschorle!
